What's Actually Wrong With Your Air Conditioner
by Ingenium Intuito Group
Most AC problems come down to a handful of root causes. Here's what we find on the majority of Toronto service calls:
Bad capacitor. This is the most common repair we do. The capacitor is a small electrical component that gives your compressor and fan motors the jolt they need to start. When it fails, your AC won't turn on, or it'll hum and struggle. For a trained technician, it's a straightforward fix — but homeowners often misread it as a full system failure and panic.
Refrigerant leak.
If your AC is blowing warm air, it's usually low on refrigerant. Here's what most people don't know: refrigerant doesn't "run out" on its own. If it's low, there's a leak somewhere. A proper repair means finding the leak, patching it, and recharging to the correct level — not just topping it up and hoping for the best.
Clogged condensate drain line. Your AC pulls humidity out of the air. That water has to go somewhere — through a drain line to the outside. Algae and dust build up over time and block it. When it backs up, water can damage your unit, your walls, or your ceiling. We clear it with a vacuum or a specialized flush kit.
Failing blower motor. The motor that pushes conditioned air through your ductwork can burn out — usually from dirty filters or years of skipped maintenance. When it goes, you feel almost no airflow even though the AC is running

When Should You Replace Your Air Conditioner?
Deciding whether to repair or replace your air conditioner depends on:
-
Age of the Unit: Older air conditioners typically last 10–12 years, while newer models can last up to 20 years.
-
Frequent Repairs: If your unit requires frequent repairs, it may be more cost-effective to replace it with a new, energy-efficient model.
